The Declaration of Independence was a Dear John letter from the American colonies to George III of Great Britain. In it, the members of Congress listed their grievances against the King George and declared that the States would no longer be under his rule. It was a risky undertaking. The Founders knew the king would retaliate. He wasn't about to surrender the taxes and resources of the Colonies without a fight. But our Founders felt the cause was great enough to risk property, liberty, and their very lives. It was a struggle to defend our inalienable rights.
